The Decatur Box project is another art initiative born of a collaboration between artist Larry Holland and the Decatur Arts Alliance. The project turns traffic signal utility boxes into public art instead of dull green/grey metal eyesores.
Last December, with a Minolta AF-C in hand loaded with Fuji 200, I photographed a few during my search for murals and sculptures. By my count, there are 22 scattered around Decatur. Painted by different artists, a wide range of styles are on display, making for an enjoyable stroll. I don’t have a favorite yet. But I have about 17 left to see.
Really cool idea, I once lived in a city in Louisiana that did this with all their fire hydrants.
Seems like a simple way to make public spaces more colorful while offering artists a venue for self-expression.
Love the shark one! Wish my town had a similar initiative, the plain utility boxes are a real eye sore.
It has only been within the last two years that I’ve discovered the number of active public art projects in the area.
