In the late afternoon shadows, and from a distance, I could not figure out what I was seeing. This building stands across West Peachtree Street from a row of trees that have grown significantly since the building was erected in 2018. In the presence of those trees, the façade seemed very much at home. At first, it seemed that, somehow, trees were casting shadows from inside the building. But, as I drew closer, etched glass with tree outlines became a more reasonable assumption. However, on further reflection, etched glass struck me as too expensive, and a meticulous paint job began making more sense. All were wrong.

The Interface building’s “skin” consists of “307 panels of glass wrapped in a semi-transparent, recyclable polyester sheath.” It depicts a life-sized Piedmont forest. Noting the name “Interface,” I naturally assumed it was the headquarters of another tech company that had found its way to Atlanta’s burgeoning Midtown business corridor. Wrong again; it’s the headquarters of a company specializing in flooring.
