The idea of a neighborhood pub intrigues me. Probably because, like many others, Cheers was one of my favorite TV shows. Pub life is often portrayed as consisting of convivial times in good company with a few drinks. Bars, in my experience, are the opposite of convivial—there is always someone who is far too loud, overly friendly, or falling-down drunk.
(At first, I thought this image was simply underexposed. However, going back through my negatives, I now see it was also underdeveloped due to nearly exhausted chemicals.)
My wife and I have explored the pubs in our area, but we always felt they had a dim, basement-like vibe. We gave up on the bars, taverns and pubs and embraced the world of craft breweries. Every Wednesday, we grab a slice and head to a local brewery situated on a farm. Once a month, the brewery hosts a brewer’s hour, and we’ve had the chance to meet a few regulars. We can enjoy convivial times, good company, and a pint of fresh, local craft beer.
Yes! The last time I had a good night out with a few work friends was at a craft brewery. It served the best Hefe-Weizen I’ve had yet, and it had great atmosphere.
I don’t spend much time in bars, at least not ones without food, but I think fraternal organizations are a whole different situation. Being a new arrival in a small tight knit community, I found fitting in a real challenge.
A casual friend introduced me to a local lodge and it changed everything. I was invited to join, then to become involved, then become an officer. If you volunteer and make some small contribution, and reach out, you will eventually find you have many new friends. It does not happen overnight, but if you make the effort, it will happen. In 13 years of membership, I have never seen a fight, or even a serious loud argument. Two times, a member has gotten a bit loud and over enthused, but a word from the bartender or an officer has quieted them right down, and on later visits they were subdued and contrite. Try that at your average neighborhood pub! It is the closest you are likely to find to a “Cheers” experience.
Sounds like you found something that works really well for you! That’s good to hear. My current situation meets my needs, so no problem there. However, the bar scene has never been my thing.
